Estonia is the most northerly of the Baltic States . It is a mainly flat country on the eastern shores of the Baltic Sea , with many lakes and islands. Much of the land is farmed or forested. The Estonian language is closely related to Finnish.

The capital, Tallinn , is one of the best-preserved mediaeval cities in Europe . The main sectors of the economy are engineering, food products, metals, chemicals and wood products.

The Estonian Constitution states, “Everybody has the right to an education. Attending school is compulsory for all school-age children to the extent established by law, and is free in general education schools established by state and local governments.”

Also, the people of Estonia have always valued learning and proper education. It is because of this reason that even during the Soviet regime, the government of the country stressed on preserving the Estonian language and culture.

The Estonian higher education system consists of universities and professional higher schools. While the universities in the country excel in providing academic higher education and diploma programmes the professional higher schools have expertise in providing professional diploma studies and vocational higher education programmes. The country has more than 47 higher educational institutions that provide higher or higher professional programmes.
