Immigration to Canada in 2020

Editorial Uncategorized

Immigration to Canada has been a way of supporting economic, cultural, and population growth in the country. Over the years, millions of people have immigrated to Canada on a permanent or temporary basis. Some look for a better financial situation, to be closer to family, or to find refuge in a safe and welcoming place. Immigrants seek opportunities and provide enrichment for those around them. Canada is diverse with strong economic, cultural, and social parts of its society.

Canada welcomed just over 184,000 immigrants to its borders in 2020. That was down significantly due to the global pandemic and was the lowest level for immigrants to Canada in some years.

The top three countries for immigration to Canada in 2020 were India, China, and the Philippines. India has been a leading source of immigrants to Canada over the past few years due to college/university degrees, work experience, and English fluency.

Canada is launching an ambitious objective for immigrants in 2021 and the years to follow. The IRCC and provinces/territories will continue to process applications. This will be an interesting time for immigration to Canada.

Historic Number of Immigrants Offered Permanent Residence in Canada in Early 2021

Editorial Uncategorized

On Feb. 13, 2021, Canada invited 27,332 immigrants currently in Canada to apply to become permanent residents of Canada. It was the largest single group offered from the Express Entry system in Canadian history. This particular group was from the Canadian Experience Class.

The Express Entry system is part of the Canadian government’s immigration system. It is used to manage applications from skilled workers for permanent residence. It includes the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, and the Canadian Experience Class.

On Feb. 17, 2021, 654 immigrants from the Provincial Nominee Program were also invited to apply for permanent residence in Canada. The Provincial Nominee Program is a provincial program in Canada for skilled workers to legally immigrate to Canada and strengthen local economies.

That makes for a total of 27,986 invitations to apply to become permanent residents of Canada.

Immigration, Refugee, and Citizenship Canada hopes that in 2021, it will welcome 401,000 immigrants to Canada. The country hopes to make more temporary residents into permanent residents during the pandemic. It also hopes to continue to look outside the country for skilled labour. These avenues will help boost the Canadian economy during the post-pandemic recovery.

So, now is a great time to look at immigrating to Canada and the many ways open to do so!

Canada’s Ambitious Immigration Plan for 2021

Editorial Uncategorized

As the pandemic continues but with the hope of a vaccine, Canada is planning to boost the number of immigrants in 2021 and for years following. This is in large part to help Canada recover economically from the pandemic. Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada has continued to process applications, but the pandemic has produced a host of issues that has resulted in fewer immigrants. To make up for this, Canada’s 2021‒2023 Immigration Levels Plan has a goal of bringing immigrants to its shores at a rate of about 1 percent of the population per year. In 2021, that means about 401,000 immigrants to Canada. The following years could see immigration totals that are even higher. All of this is likely tied to whether the pandemic can be brought under control with the vaccines, but there are bound to be more immigrants in the years to come.

The last time Canada had a number of immigrants over 400,000 was 1913. The next three years could be over that amount.

A focus of this immigration plan will be on economic growth, with many skilled workers immigrating to Canada. About 60 percent of immigrants will come through the Economic Class of managers, professionals, and skilled tradespeople. The Economic Mobility Pathways Project will also help refugees come to Canada. Canada also accepts immigrants based on family and humanitarian grounds.

Canada will be a top country for immigration in 2021, and this could provide a path to permanent residence for many.
